Buddhist Tzu Chi General Hospital was established by Master Cheng Yen in 1986 to provide quality medical services in a humanistic way to people in eastern Taiwan. In 2002, it was accredited by the Taiwan Joint Commission on Hospital Accreditation as a "Medical Center", and during this year, it also received ISO certification. The hospital operates with approximately 1000 beds and employs more than 3000 physicians and surgeons. Committed to the practices of preventative and holistic medicine, the hospital uses inter-discipinary methods of diagnosis and treatment for the total care of the patient’s body, mind and spirit.


Some of the specialty procedures performed by this hospital include organ transplantation, laser cosmetic surgery, high-tech health screening, stroke treatment, stem cell research, thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, malignant tumor treatment, voiding dysfunction surgery, deep-brain stimulation (for Parkinson's disease,) bone marrow transplantation and orthopedic surgery, specializing in total knee replacement, ankylosing spondylitis correction and minimally invasive spinal surgery.


Its Research Centers include the Neuro-Medical Scientific Center which provides a stereotactic navigation system for localization of brain vascular diseases and tumors and Gamma Knife Radiosurgery for brain tumors.

The Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery performs coronary artery bypass grafting surgery (CABG) off-pump (beating-heart) CABG, peripheral artery bypass grafting, lung cancer surgery, esophageal reconstruction and repair, VATS (video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery), balloon angioplasty and stenting. Noninvasive procedures for diagnosis and management include echocardiography, treadmill, ECG testing and 24 hour ambulatory ECG recording. 


The Urology Department's Voiding Dysfunctional Center is continuously developing new cures for voiding. Diagnostic methods include renal sonograms, video examinations and endoscopic surgery. Its Stem Cell Center's bone marrow registry helps people with blood diseases and has approximately 300,000 donors. 

Many international patients with severe and unusual illnesses come to be treated in this hospital in Hualien, the most important medical center in eastern Taiwan.
