Taiwan has over 500 hospitals and over 1900 clinics. Hospitals are classified as Medical Centers, Regional Hospitals, Area Hospitals, Teaching Hospitals, basic level institutions and Western and Chinese medical systems. The highest accreditation is "Medical Center" followed by "Regional Hospital". The difference is basically determined by size; Medical Centers generally have more than 1,000 beds.

Many Taiwanese doctors have been educated and trained in the U.S. or the European Union and speak English.

Taiwan's modern hospitals have state-of-the-art medical equipment and its medical technologies and practices are cutting edge.

Many public hospitals and large medical centers in Taiwan offer Chinese-English bilingual healthcare services, websites, information desks and signage. English language medical consultations can be arranged. Some hospitals now have International Healthcare Centers that provide special services for foreigners.

Most of Taiwan's medical centers and regional hospitals have passed the Taiwan Joint Commission on Hospital Accreditation (TJCHA) certification. In 2006, TJCHA received accredition from the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua). Eleven hospitals in Taiwan have been approved by the Joint Commission International (JCI), the highest level of international accreditation. They include: Min-sheng Hospital, Changhua Christian Hospital (CCH), Tungs' Taichung Metro Harbor Hospital (TTMHH), E-Da Hospital, Koo Foundation Sun Yat-Sen Cancer Center, National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH), Shuang Ho Hospital, Wan Fang Hospital, Chang Bing Show Chwan Hospital as well as others.

Taiwan is the only Asian country that has received the "Plastic Surgery Innovation" award from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the largest plastic surgery organization in the world.

Ten hospitals in Taiwan are promoting organ donations and 195 other cooperative hospitals work with these ten hospitals to report any donated organs.

Taiwan's doctors, hospitals and healthcare services which meet and even surpass worldclass standards have helped make it a significant player in the field of medical and cosmetic tourism.
